The first step in planning your vacation is to lock down your dates and book your rooms. Jasper County has many great places to stay, from hotels to campgrounds. Once this is done, it’s time to start planning the fun stuff!
Outdoor Activities & Sports
If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, visit the Blue Heron Nature Trail or the Savannah Wildlife Refuge. At the Blue Heron Nature Trail you can drive or stroll through identify native plant species or local wildlife.
The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is also a popular destination, consisting of over 30,000 acres of river, creek, and freshwater marshes. With all of the various nature trails, parks and refuges in Jasper County, there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching, fishing, hiking, kayaking, and so much more!
If you’re interested in sports, you may want to take a short drive to neighboring Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament. The only PGA TOUR event in South Carolina, the RBC Heritage has been played on Hilton Head Island since 1969. Its host, the Heritage Classic Foundation, donates Tournament proceeds to charitable organizations in the Lowcountry.
History
For those interested in history, there’s no better place than the South Carolina Lowcountry. The area is full of rich history visible through several landmarks. While our county’s involvement in the Civil and Revolutionary war were not recognized as much as other places in the South, what happened here plays a big role in how it shaped the county and the region as we know today.
Pratt Memorial Library is a fascinating historic landmark. Donated by Pauline Dodge Pratt, the library was given to the county in honor of her late husband, Frederic R. Pratt. When Pauline remarried to Richard K. Webel, nationally renowned architect, the Pratt Memorial Library’s Garden was designed by the architect himself and continues to attract locals and visitors to the library to admire his work.
Filled with almost 300 books and more than 200 portraits and maps, the Pratt Memorial Library offers rare insight into the past of Jasper County.
The Frampton House Museum is another important site. It was once the site of “The Hill” Plantation and owned by John Edward Frampton in the 1800’s. Although General Sherman burned the plantation house and surrounding farmhouses to the ground, John Frampton rebuilt and continued to work on the land.
Major renovations were done to the house throughout the 1900’s and eventually was bought by individual owners. However, in 1991, the Lowcountry Tourism Commission was able to secure the donation of the house and four surrounding acres to eventually become the Lowcountry Visitors Center & Museum that we know today.
Visitors are able to tour the house, learn about its history and even see the various displays created to depict other local attractions in Jasper County.
